At the Wharton Aero & Tech West 2012 conference in San Francisco on September 27th, Steven Grundman organized and moderated a panel discussion addressing innovation in aerospace and defense. The panel comprised Reginald Brothers, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of (U.S.) Defense for Research; Rebecca Taylor, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the U.S. Department of State; Tom Guthrie, President and CEO of Twisted Pair Solutions; and Annette Mason, a partner at Blue Mine Group. Two themes dominated the discussion. The first concerned the importance of engaging users–not just “customers” or buyers–to discover the particular utilities that would shape valuable innovations. The second concerned the need for a wide variety of tactics to cultivate innovation, rather than rely solely on either a genius’s inspiration or brute-force perspiration to unlock it.
